The Myth Of Spot Reduction

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

One of the most common things you hear people say now a days is ” i need to lose fat around my stomach or around my thighs” or what ever body part they mention. The problem with this mentality that most people make the mistake of is that it is impossible to to lose fat in one area alone or to target one body area in particular. Doing a million abs is not going to get you slimmer in your stomach, doing squats is or any exercise for that matter is not going to reduce the fat around your legs.

The simple truth like it or not, is that if you really want to lose weight in an area that is bothering you, you have to lose overall weight which means all over your body. As you begin to drop weight your body will naturally shed itself of the unwanted pounds, and you will notice an overall weight loss effect including the areas that you want to target. All the products you see on TV that promise if you strap their belt around your abs in one month you will have a six pack are just playing on the hope that you are misinformed on the issue of spot reduction. Kick start your weight loss however you see fit but once the pounds start to melt off, you will start to see the fat around the area that you hate so much reduce.

Now along side of your weight loss you can do some weight training on the area that you would like to see improved. Do not confuse this with losing fat around this one area by itself, but in conjunction with weight loss if you do some weigh training you can slowly start to tone and firm the muscle while at the same time dropping the fat level which equals over all better aesthetic results for you and the people around you :) . So next time you see a product on TV with a tag line “get rid of that pesky belly fat” you know just what to do and save yourself some extra money.

Tried Every Technique to Lose Your Stubborn Belly Fat?

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

No matter what you do the belly fat still hangs over your pants. We see all these wonderful commercials on T.V & on the radio about “How To Lose Your Belly Fat” in one day using their fantastic diet pill. Change the channel on the T.V. to see muscular men & women claiming that when they used the new improved “ab-belt”, “belly fat remover”, “ab-rocker thingy” they all lost that unsightly stomach fat in a matter of days, not weeks.

Believe me ladies & gentlemen these types of products do not work overnight as they are advertised. The only way to your going to lose that ugly belly fat is to follow a regime of healthy food & exercise.

To be able to reduce the fat from your stomach, you need to stop doing so many different types of abdominal exercises.

The truth is, losing belly fat does NOT occur by doing exercises that target the stomach area only. A certain amount of abdominals exercises are great and they help you strengthen your core and help you in maintaining a healthy back. The fact is that direct abs exercises should only be a small portion of your workout routines.

To get rid of that belly fat, you need to concentrate on exercising your big multi-joint areas & work on the largest muscles, such as the legs, back & chest. Targeting these big muscle areas will greatly increase your metabolic rate, which in turn helps to stimulate an increase of fat burning hormones within the body.

It is also very important to eat a well balanced diet with lots of healthy carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

One fitness program I have been using is by a well renowned Certified Nutrition Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer by the name of Mike Geary.

Mike has developed a training program to help reduce that ugly belly fat & keep it off for good.

Discover how to lose that stubborn stomach fat & release those six pack abs.

The True Life of Stomach Exercises

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

There is rarely more buzz in the fitness and exercise industry that for that which surrounds stomach movements. A simple web search reveals hundreds of different gimmicks, machines or gadgets that have flooded the market to satisfy the wants of people looking for flat stomach, or for the six pack abs that everybody wants.

My concern is that the majority of the stomach products advertised are based on a faulty theory, and so they are not often the best way to get the six pack stomach look. Let’s take a look at the myth, firstly if you want to see your six pack abs the highest priority for you if to lose the fat over the top of them. I you have been training for a while more than likely you will have some decent stomach muscles, they are simply covered up by the extra fat.

You will have better luck, getting your stomach flatter, by focusing more of your training time doing high intensity whole body and multi joint movements, instead of doing hundreds of reps of stomach movements. This type of training is best as bigger movements use more energy and create a better hormone effect leading to the burning of more fat over time.

Using movements that target the big muscles of the legs, chest and your back give your more benefit for the effort you put into your training metabolically, and lead to more stomach fat loss. Using a combination of these big movements with high intensity training using super sets, or circuit training increases your metabolism more and gives a better fat burning hormone response from your training.

This is the biggest reason most people don’t get the six pack stomach they want, the best way to get great abs is not what it seems!

When you have dealt with enough fat and want to start bringing out your abs, another mistake I see all the time is in not using enough resistance, while doing hundreds of crunches and other pointless stomach movements that don’t challenge your stomach muscles much at all. To properly develop your stomach muscles, you shouldn’t waste your time with movements where you can do more that about 20 repetitions, if you can do more than 20 repetitions there is not enough resistance for the movement to be effective for your stomach muscles. To train the abs better give your body enough resistance so that you can only do 6 to 15 repetitions and feel the difference.

When looking for higher resistance movements for the abs they usually involve curling the legs and your pelvic up to your core. Some great examples of these movements are knee raises (while moving your pelvis up) and hanging leg raises. I often find that even though someone can do 100 crunches they can rarely do 1 or 2 complete hanging leg raises with good form.

If you honestly do want firmer more defined abs, remember that the more important thing to do is to lose the belly fat. Then when you are doing your stomach movements use the higher intensity high resistance movements like the leg raises to work the abs in the best way possible.

Get Rid of Stomach Flab and Get Flat Abs With This Secret

Friday, October 16th, 2009

If you struggle to reduce your belly fat, so that you can uncover those elusive six pack abs, then I’m going to reveal in this article why you haven’t been able to make progress with this area of your fitness.

A couple major problems I see as a fitness professional are that most people who are trying to lose stomach fat:

1. Most people spend way too much of their exercise efforts focusing on cardio based workouts, when in fact, a properly designed, high intensity strength training routine causes a much better hormonal response and metabolic rate increase than cardio based workout programs.

Also, as long as the strength training workout is designed with the right types of full body multi-joint exercises, and with the right types of rest intervals and intensity, you can actually burn as many calories (if not more calories) than with a typical cardio workout.

2. Another problem is that many people still think that they should be spending all of their workout time doing exercises that specifically target the stomach area and obliques. I think you should understand by now that spending all of your time doing exercises targeting the abs doesn’t do much to burn the fat off of your stomach and love handles area.

Again, your time in your workouts could be much better spent by focusing on strategic strength training exercise combinations and full body training that will result in a much better decrease of body fat over time.

3. When it comes to diet, many people try to follow some sort of fad diet that restricts a certain macronutrient too much… like extremely low fat diets, or super low carb diets. The fact is that your body needs all of the macronutrients and food groups to maintain proper balance and build muscle and burn fat most effectively. Trying to eliminate certain food groups or macronutrients in general sets most people up for failure.

The main focus should be on avoiding processed foods, artificial ingredients, trans fats (hydrogenated oils), high fructose corn syrup, and other junk foods, while focusing on a whole-food organic diet full of variety and high nutrient density.

Many times when people get past the fads and gimmick diets and start to eat in a balanced whole food manner, a lot of the problems they were having start to take care of themselves, and the body fat starts to melt off, energy levels increase, and hormones are back in balance.

See below for more of the key secrets to flattening your stomach and bringing out sexy flat abs for life.

Abs Diet Ideas for Losing Body Fat

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Below is the portion of an interview I did recently where we covered our best nutrition and diet strategies for losing body fat to uncover those 6 Pack Abs that everyone wants. Here goes…

CB: And finally Mike, a couple of your best diet strategies for etching out those 6 pack abs. Give us your best info!

MG: No problem Craig. I think you’d agree that there has never been a more confusing time regarding proper nutrition and diet for consumers. Every so called “nutrition expert” out there seems to disagree and contradict each other on what’s the best way to eat for fat loss and overall good health.

One of the most important messages I try to teach my readers in this world of heavy confusion is that your diet does not need to conform to any of the fad diets… you don’t need to go “low carb” or “low fat”, or high or low anything for that matter to be successful in losing enough body fat to get lean enough to be able to see your abs. I like to try to simplify things for my readers. I think that balance is the key to success along with eating a diet that is made up of nutrient dense foods in their natural state (as unprocessed as possible).

In general, it is the heavy processing of foods that makes it wreak havoc inside our bodies. Most foods in their natural unprocessed state are inherently good for us. Of course there are always exceptions… a salad of poison ivy leaves is “natural and unprocessed” but certainly wouldn’t be good for us!

I will summarize here with a couple of the most important aspects of nutrition that help to get you lean for life and showing off a six pack…

1. Get enough quality protein in the daily diet - not only does it have a higher thermic effect than carbs and fat (so you burn more calories digesting it), but it also creates satiety so your hunger is satisfied longer. Plus it is a building block for maintaining and building lean muscle… And remember that the amount of lean muscle you carry is one of the main factors for controlling your metabolism.

2. Think fiber! When it comes to carbs, make sure that almost all of your carbohydrate intake is from higher fiber sources like vegetables, fruits, and high fiber unrefined grains. Try to avoid refined sugars and refined grains as that is one of the main reasons so many people struggle with body fat. I personally do not eat many grains as I prefer to get most of my carbs from veggies and fruits, but I am a bit of a fan of sprouted grains. I generally recommend looking for carbohydrate sources that have at least 2-3 grams of fiber per each 10 grams of total carbs. Remember that fiber helps fill you up and also slows down the glycemic response of the foods you eat, all beneficial for losing body fat.

3. Don’t be afraid to eat dietary fat! Many people try to go way too low on their fat intake and this can negatively affect hormone levels in your body as well as causing more cravings. Try to eat enough healthy fats daily. Good sources are all nuts and seeds, nut butters, avocados, olive oil, organic meats and eggs, coconuts and virgin coconut oil. On that note, saturated fats from tropical oils are VERY misunderstood, even by many nutritionists and other health professionals. Yes they are composed highly of saturated fats, but are actually beneficial (but that’s way beyond the scope of this article).

4. Avoid the two worst things in our food supply at ALL COSTS:

*artificial trans fats from margarines, shortening, and hydrogenated oils that are in most processed foods

*high fructose corn syrup, which is in almost all sweetened products on the market

Again, if you avoid processed foods, it becomes easy to avoid these two worst offenders in our food supply.

I always contend that once you get a handle on these 4 main points of your diet detailed above, the rest starts to take care of itself as you gain control over your appetite, blood sugar levels, hormone levels, etc. It all falls into place, and you eventually gain total control over how lean you want to get.

CB: Thanks Mike!

3 Core Strengthening Exercises for Killer Abs

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Rock hard abs are the hallmark of a sexy body today. No abs? So sorry… goodbye!

But developing that six pack belly doesn’t come easy. There’s no machine that can do the work for you. Abs must be developed the old fashioned way. You have to earn them — and you start with core training.

Before you attempt any of these exercises, if you have any kind of lower back problem be sure to check with your doctor. The purpose of these exercises is to strengthen your core, which form the foundation for killer abs.

The three exercises are:

 1. The Plank
 2. The Side Plank
 3. The Superman

1. The Plank

Get into a pushup position. It’s important to have your body absolutely straight. Support your upper body by putting your forearms on the floor.

Remember to keep your body in an absolutely straight line. Don’t lift up your butt, drop your head, or arch your back because those things will make the exercise easier — and that isn’t the point! Hold this position for 30-60 seconds or as long as you can.

To make the exercise harder — so that you will get more benefit from it — lift and hold one foot a few inches off the floor during this exercise. Loading your core unevenly will make the Plank tougher, and thus more effective.

2. The Side Plank

If you thought the plank was tough, wait until you try the Side Plank! Lie down on one side. Now brace your forearm on the floor and lift your hips off of the floor. The only parts of your body touching the floor should be your forearm and your feet.

Remember to keep your body in a straight line… don’t bend forward. Hold the position for 15 to 30 seconds or as long as you can.

To get more benefit from the Side Plank, try lifting the top foot just a few inches while you are in position. It’s surprising how really tough this exercise is — but it is also a very effective exercise for strengthening your core.

3. The Superman

You’ve seen superman fly, right? SO lie down on the floor on your belly and stretch your arms out in front of you. Spread your arms so that they make a “V” with your head.

Now keeping your legs together, raise them off of the floor. Be sure to get your knees up OFF the floor! Hold the position for 30 to 60 seconds or as long as you can.

These three exercises are just the FOUNDATION. By themselves they won’t give you killer abs, but they are a good beginning. Unlike wimpy weight machine exercises, they’re hard.

But remember what Vince Lombardi said, “The dictionary is the only place where ‘results’ comes before ‘work’.” That sums it up when it comes to conquering that belly flab — without core training, no results!

What You Need to Know to Shape Your Abs

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

If you are looking to shape your abs and begin doing ab exercises, there are some things to consider first. Allowing yourself to learn the correct procedures before you begin will help to make sure you are not wasting your time in the gym and so you don’t injure yourself.

Doing sit ups and crunches alone will not turn your belly into a six pack. Only because these ab exercises don’t focus entirely on your abs and will work the hip flexors once your abs are exhausted.

Working the hip flexors too much can actually make your belly look fatter so you’ll want to learn some proper exercises to strengthen and shape your abs. Doing constant sit ups and crunches will only result in a sore neck!

Proper crunches WILL help shape your abs but you have to do them right. Keep your eyes up focusing on the ceiling and only go one-third of the way up. Contract your abs while breathing out and repeat until you can’t do anymore.

Some of the best ways to shape your abs will require you to use weights, and you don’t even need to focus specifically on the ab region. The two best ways to really shape your abs are using weight lifting exercises like dead lifts and squats. Your abs are going to naturally contract to stabilize your body when doing these exercises. Since you are using weight resistance, your abs will most certainly get more ripped than by doing your normal sit-ups or crunches.

The food that you eat is the one determinant that you will have to control if you want nice abs. If your diet is no good, it doesn’t matter how hard you work in the gym, you’ll never develop or shape your abs the way you want to. Dieting is the most important aspect when working to develop your abs.

Using dead lifts and squats as a part of your work out regimen along with a healthy diet will bring the results you are looking for, even without using any ab specific workouts. Of course finding a few ab exercises to include in your workout will only speed up the process. Just remember that sit-ups and crunches are not the answer. The answer lies with using dead lifts and squats in your workout routine along with dieting!

How To Get Ripped Abs And Strengthen Your Core: 3 Easy-To-Do Ab Exercises

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

If you’re looking to get that six pack you’ve always wanted, there are many different ab exercises that you can do to strengthen your core and build those muscles. I am going to go over 3 different exercises that you can do to today that will give you a well rounded work out.

Ab Exercise #1 - Do Crunches

Crunches are a very short movement exercise that will isolate your upper abs. To do them, lie on the floor with your feet close to you and cross your arms over your chest. Now pull your upper chest to your knees using your ab muscles. Only lift up far enough so you feel it in your abs and your upper back is off the floor. Don’t lift your lower back off the floor. Also Do not use momentum or try to pull on your head to do the crunch.

Ab Exercise #2 - Do Sit Ups

Sit ups are a full range version of the crunch and will focus on all the muscles in your front abs. Get in the same position you would for crunches, with back on the floor and feet on the ground. Then lift your entire body up to your knees, pulling with your ab muscles. This ab exercise will eventually get easy enough for you to start adding weight. You can hold a weight on your chest or use a medicine ball to make the exercise more difficult. You can check out these ab workouts on this page for more info and some videos.

Ab Exercise #3 - Do Heel Raises

Heel raises will isolate your lower ab muscles, which are the hardest muscles to get to show. It is important to strengthen all areas of your abdominals and not just focus on 1 or 2. To do this ab exercise, lie on the floor and lift your legs up, without bending them, until they are at a 90 degree angle to your body. Keep your hands at your sides. Now push your heels straight up and focus on moving them with your lower ab muscles. This is a short range of motion exercise, your heels will only raise about 4-5 inches.

These 3 exercises will get you on the road to that six pack you’re looking to sculpt. There are many more and different variations that you can do to work your abs even harder. Note that we have only worked the front of your abs so far, and not your obliques (the sides). To learn the best and fastest route to a sculpted midsection, check out my 7-day Six Pack Abs crash course.
