The Myth Of Spot Reduction
One of the most common things you hear people say now a days is ” i need to lose fat around my stomach or around my thighs” or what ever body part they mention. The problem with this mentality that most people make the mistake of is that it is impossible to to lose fat in one area alone or to target one body area in particular. Doing a million abs is not going to get you slimmer in your stomach, doing squats is or any exercise for that matter is not going to reduce the fat around your legs.
The simple truth like it or not, is that if you really want to lose weight in an area that is bothering you, you have to lose overall weight which means all over your body. As you begin to drop weight your body will naturally shed itself of the unwanted pounds, and you will notice an overall weight loss effect including the areas that you want to target. All the products you see on TV that promise if you strap their belt around your abs in one month you will have a six pack are just playing on the hope that you are misinformed on the issue of spot reduction. Kick start your weight loss however you see fit but once the pounds start to melt off, you will start to see the fat around the area that you hate so much reduce.
Now along side of your weight loss you can do some weight training on the area that you would like to see improved. Do not confuse this with losing fat around this one area by itself, but in conjunction with weight loss if you do some weigh training you can slowly start to tone and firm the muscle while at the same time dropping the fat level which equals over all better aesthetic results for you and the people around you
. So next time you see a product on TV with a tag line “get rid of that pesky belly fat” you know just what to do and save yourself some extra money.

If spot reduction is a myth, how come the rest of my body lost fat but the arms remain fat?
I have been doing lots of cardiovascular exercises to lose the fat arm!! But no matter how much exercise I do, the arm remains fat while the rest of my body became thinner already!! Is spot reduction a myth and is there such a thing as spot retention of fat?

Simple, your body is going to other areas of your body for the calories it needs while you are exercising. Stick with it, you will notice the change eventually. Trust me.

If you’re a woman, fat tends to build up more in the arms, thighs, and around the waist. Try a full-body workout like jogging, or if you want to focus more on your arms, get some free weights.

It’s a matter of genes also. Women tend to store fat on their arms more than man.
