Advanced Workouts for not Only Abs and Core, But Full Body

I received a question today from a Sergeant who was looking for high intensity workouts with some work for abs, core, and full body to take his team of 30+ soldiers to a new level of fitness in preparation for their PT testing.

He basically said that the men had reached a plateau in their training and needed something really high intensity to take them to the next level.

My response is below…Keep in mind that this workout I gave him uses bodyweight-only exercises, however, it is VERY intense and for people looking for advanced fitness levels.

With that said, keep in mind that if you’re not yet at an advanced level, you can still use this by simply using the basic format of the workout, and just do less of whatever exercises you struggle with, or choose an easier alternate exercise that’s similar.

Here goes…

"Hi J****. To get your soldiers to that next level in their workouts, we’re going to keep the intensity super high here and use the whole body. Keep rest periods short, and use full-body multijoint movements as much as possible.

I’ll give you a killer workout idea below that not only incorporates abs and entire core, but the entire body as well in an intense fashion. Not sure what (if any) equip you have available, so I’ll give you a great workout that’s bodyweight based. Here’s an example to take your men through:

Start with a 2-3 min warmup of light jogging, jumping jacks, or jump rope.

Then, move through these exercises in circuit fashion, one right after the other with only 10 seconds rest between each (repeat the circuit 3-5 times for a killer total body workout):

1. bodyweight squats - 12 reps

2. plyo pushups (clapping) - 10 reps

3. walking lunges up 6 steps and back 6 steps

4. floor mountain climbers for 30 seconds

5. lunge jumps - 6 reps to each side

6. lying leg thrusts (abs) on floor - 12 reps

7. squat jumps - 8 reps

8. side plank hold 30 seconds one side, then 30 sec opposite side

Rest 2 min after each circuit; repeat circuit 3-5x

If that doesn’t get them through the plateau and ready for the next PT test, nothing will!

Wondering about working out while pregnant?
Ok, so this is my first baby and I just found out I am pregnant I am about only 5 weeks right now. I normally do my workout videos by the Firm about 4 days a week and I was eating only 1100 calories a day. I was doing the following videos: Maximum Calorie Burn Bootcamp(ok not sure if thats the full name), Total Body Time Crunch, Cardio Overdirve, and Hard Core Fushion. Ok, so my question is would it be safe to continue any of these workouts? Or would they be too much. Should I maybe just switch to my run/walk for 2 1/2 miles or just do a ton of walking? Thank you in advance for any of your advice

I am thinking that if you were doing them before it is probably ok to continue them now…at least until you get to where it is impossible to do them. I am also actually about 4 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby and I just got back from a Boot Camp work out class this morning. I had a friend that worked out up until about a month before her baby was born. Just tone it down a bit when you get towards the end of your pregnancy.

It is ok to workout while pregnant but in moderation, it is not, however, ok to diet. Being pregnant puts a lot of stress on your body as is. I would suggest cutting out all of your workout routines and sticking to NO IMPACT walking, yoga and stretching. Running, jogging and jumping around are not good for the baby.
Dieting is very dangerous for the baby as you need all the nutrients you can get. I would double check your recommended calorie in take for you weight and height and add 300 calories/day to that. The baby needs those extra 300 calories so don’t cut them out!! I’m sure you eat healthy as is, as you sound like a very fit conscious person, so make those calories count!
Stay healthy but do no go crazy, your baby needs you to pamper yourself. It’s true that the healthier and better shape you are in the easier your birth will be but don’t over do it. Keep limber and strong but do not be attempting to lose weight right now. Your baby wants you to gain a TON of weight. 20-25 lbs. is a good weight gain fro people with normal BMI’s
    Good luck!

As long as your pregnancy is progressing normally you can continue your work out routine. The only thing you should be aware of is if it seams like your pushing yourself then rest and take a break. Even go down a level on the routine if its to intense for you. Most doctors say though that a routine already established can be continued. Make sure to drink plenty of water, that’s 10 8 oz cups a day at least! Also you’ll need to increase the amount of calories a day to at least 1900 a day. Baby needs an extra 300 hundred calories a day plus your 1100. However you already consume way less then the recommended amount for an expected mom! Some sites like march of dimes and webmd suggest as much as 2400 calories a day. I would just increase to the 1900 so that baby can have the calories it needs for developing as well. Ask your doctor as well but I think you’ll be fine. Good luck!

I am 27 weeks pregnant and during my whole pregnancy I have been going to the gym and working out. My doctor said that was fine as long as I avoid any kind of ab work out and also no running. you can power walk but no running. Hope this helps.
